The Dholera Semiconductor Fab (Tata + PSMC), Explained

Updated July 2026 · 3 min read · Sourced and labelled

The Tata + PSMC fab is the single biggest reason Dholera is on the map. It is also the project most surrounded by hype and confusion about dates and chips. This guide lays out what is confirmed and what is still a target.

No source confirms a chip has been produced there yet, and we say so plainly.

How to read this guide. Every figure is tagged DURABLE, REPORTED or TARGET, and sources are listed at the end. This is information, not investment advice, and we do not sell plots.

What is being built

It is India's first major commercial semiconductor fab, built by Tata Electronics with Taiwan's PSMC as technology partner (entity: Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Pvt Ltd). The Union Cabinet approved it on 29 February 2024 under the India Semiconductor Mission. DURABLE

Investment is Rs 91,000 cr (about US$11B), capacity up to 50,000 wafers per month on 300mm wafers, at mature and specialty nodes (28/40/55/90/110 nm), making products like power-management ICs, display drivers and microcontrollers. DURABLE It is under construction; no chip has been confirmed produced yet.

The nodes and products

The fab uses mature and specialty nodes: 28, 40, 55, 90 and 110 nm on 300mm wafers. DURABLE The first chips will be at a mature node (90nm, then 55nm), with 28nm to follow later, not cutting-edge sub-10nm logic. REPORTED These nodes serve autos, appliances, industrial and consumer electronics.

The Tata-PSMC fab targets mature and specialty-node products: power-management ICs, display drivers, microcontrollers and high-performance computing logic, at nodes from 28 to 110 nm on 300mm wafers. DURABLE These are the kinds of chips used across autos, appliances, industrial and consumer electronics, not cutting-edge sub-10nm processors.

ASML and why it matters

Tata Electronics announced a strategic lithography partnership with ASML (a global lithography leader) for the 300mm Dholera fab, reported around 17 May 2026 and confirmed on Tata Electronics' own press page. DURABLE Lithography lead times of 18 to 24 months make this the pacing item for any 2026 target.

When the first chip

First (trial) silicon is targeted around late 2026 (about December 2026), a target repeatedly cited by the IT Minister and Tata Electronics leadership. TARGET No source confirms a chip has actually been produced.

The first chips will be at a mature node (90nm, then 55nm), with 28nm to follow, not 28nm first. REPORTED Commercial-scale production is reported pushed to about mid-2028. REPORTED So the honest position is: under construction, first mature-node trial silicon targeted late 2026, commercial output later.

No. The fab is under construction, reported past the halfway mark with cleanroom installation and equipment calibration underway as of Apr-May 2026. REPORTED First (trial) silicon is targeted around late 2026 and commercial production is reported around mid-2028. TARGET No chip has been confirmed produced there yet.

No source confirms that a chip has been produced at Dholera yet. REPORTED The fab is under construction, first trial silicon is targeted around late 2026, and commercial production is reported around mid-2028. Anyone claiming chips are already shipping from Dholera is ahead of the evidence.

Jobs and the SEZ

The Tata fab is cited as creating more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, with a longer-term multi-fab vision of around 100,000. TARGET These are targets tied to full development, not current headcount.

The Centre notified a 66-hectare Tata Semiconductor SEZ in Dholera, reported on 14 April 2026, a concrete governance step for the fab. REPORTED Separately, the NICDC ledger records a 66-ha Tata SEZ context; treat the notification as reported, multi-source.

The Vedanta-Foxconn history

Vedanta and Foxconn signed an MoU with Gujarat in September 2022, widely cited at about US$19.5B. Foxconn withdrew on 10 July 2023 and that project never built anything. DURABLE The US$19.5B was a joint-venture project value, not committed capital.

A separate solo Vedanta Dholera fab claim (reported around Rs 1.54 lakh cr, first chip ~2027) is an announced or restructured claim, not a confirmed build. The bankable, breaking-ground fab in Dholera is the Tata + PSMC one.

No. Micron's fab is in Sanand, not Dholera. DURABLE It is a common mix-up; do not attribute Micron's plant to Dholera. The Dholera fab is Tata Electronics with PSMC.
